Businessman Scott Ashjian has virtually no chance of winning Nevada's Senate race, but with just a few points separating Democratic Sen. Harry Reid from Republican Sharron Angle, he has suddenly become the man to watch ... and the man to influence.It's the classic case of the spoiler candidate.
Ashjian is backed by the state tea party, while Angle draws support from national tea party groups. Lately, Ashjian's own backers have urged him to drop out of the race for fear that he'll siphon votes from Angle and help secure Reid's win.
Indeed, Ashjian supporters arranged a secret meeting between the two candidates Wednesday, in which Angle prevailed on her rival to withdraw, according to multiplemedia accounts.
