Canada: Green Elected to Parliament

Elizabeth May, the Green party leader, will be an asset to the House of Commons. She worked very hard to win in Saanich-Gulf Islands, and deserves a shot to prove herself on a new stage. It won't be easy. As the lone representative of her party in the House, she'll be an independent for all intents and purposes, which means she won't have much power -especially since the size of the Conservative majority means she won't often be courted for her vote. But her high profile, her passion and her eloquence will ensure that she has a disproportionate influence on public opinion, and perhaps also on her fellow MPs.

Pirate Party of Canada Calls for Copyright Reform

The Pirate Party of Canada, which officially registered with Elections Canada this month, has already attracted nearly 1,800 members from coast to coast and promises to field candidates in the next federal election, during which they hope to make copyright reform a key campaign issue.

Pirate Party of Canada Gains Official Party Status

Earlier this month Canada's chief electoral officer gave the Pirate Party of Canada party status, which means the burgeoning party can field candidates in the next election, raise money and issue tax receipts.

The party, which advocates copyright and patent reform, net neutrality and privacy among its key platform planks, first started in Sweden but now has branches in the U.K., Australia and many other European countries.
