After weeks of speculation, former Republican congressman Joe Schwarz said Wednesday he is going to try for an independent run at the governor's office. Schwarz said he plans in coming days to register an exploratory committee for a campaign, which will allow him to raise money for his candidacy. . . . Schwarz said he was motivated "only by my belief that the chasm between the two parties is so wide and so deep that even though a Democratic candidate or Republican candidate would think they can't be pulled to the far left or the far right, they're going to be because that's where the parties are."
