I proffer over at "A New Kind of Third Party" that the use of multi-seated state legislative elections would handicap the rivalry between the two major parties just enough that we'd see a "red queen effect" where there is a political "evolutionary arms race" between them. Both would need to innovate themselves on an ongoing basis just to retain their relatively large "market share" of the US polity, which would more often than not be to the advantage of political outsiders (like us) who have ideas/needs that can easily be presented in ways that appeal to the center or most US_Americans.
