U.S. Sen. John Thune, RS.D., made state history this week when no Democrat filed to run against him by Tuesday’s deadline. Thune now has the distinction of being the first U.S. Senate candidate from South Dakota to run without majorparty opposition since direct election of senators began in 1913. He’ll be the first Senate candidate in state history to run without any opposition whatsoever if no independent candidates enter the race by their June 8 deadline.

With any luck, the Constitution Party (which is ballot-qualified in South Dakota) and which has a candidate for US Senate, will get on the November ballot. The state is excluding him from the Constitution Party primary ballot because he didn't get 250 signatures of Constitution Party members on a petition. But the party only has 300 or so registered members, and no one else can sign. He did get 120 registered party members to sign, and I am hoping the party will sue.
