Independents represent, among other things, the grassroots distrust of the two-party system in U.S. electoral politics. As discontent with both Republicans and Democrats sweeps through the country, some suggest that we need a third political party, but the truth is that we need two or even more third parties to adequately represent the spectrum of American opinion. The Green Party grew out of a dynamic green movement, coalescing as a body that was ready to run candidates for office in the early 1990s.
