AL: State Senator Considers Running as Independent

From the Andalusia Star News:
State Sen. Harri Anne Smith asked supporters Monday to help her decide if she should run for her southeast Alabama Senate seat as an independent after being disqualified as a Republican candidate. Smith sent an e-mail asking supporters if they wanted her to run as an independent in her Senate district that includes Geneva, Dale and Houston counties. She said most of the reaction she received was positive.

She wanted to be Republican and they turned her down and now we would want her as an independent?

Seriously?

I hope this is not what the independent movement becomes: Republican rejects.

heh. I obviously don't know all the details of this particular race/district, but I think independents should welcome former Republicans and Democrats, while remaining wary of potential pretend-ependents, as I like to call them. Many newly declared independents will obviously be former Republicans and Democrats.

Plus, weakening the major parties at all levels (via such splits and challenges among other things) is arguably in everyone's best interest.
