The trouble with both political parties is too much partisanship and strings-attached money, Lawton "Bud" Chiles said Thursday in announcing his candidacy for governor as an independent. . . . "It's big money versus big money, and the people are left on the sidelines," Chiles said of both parties. "I refuse to play that game. I am in this race as an independent, beholden to no party."The namesake son of "Walkin' Lawton" Chiles, who hiked from the Alabama border to the Florida Keys in the 1970 U.S. Senate campaign and came out of retirement to be governor 20 years ago, brought family members to the Florida Press Center for his official announcement. Chiles said he would take no more than $250 from each donor and nothing from political-action committees.
