NV: AIP Candidate Faces Penalties for Withholding Information

From the Las Vegas Sun:
A political candidate must fill out campaign contribution and expense reports or face civil penalties, the Nevada Supreme Court has ruled. The court rejected the argument of Carolyn Bauer, a candidate for the state Senate in Washoe County, who argued the requirement violated her constitutional right against self incrimination. The court said this right exists only in criminal matters. Bauer, an Independent American Party candidate, submitted her required three campaign expense reports to the secretary of state in the 2002 election, but she left the income and expense lines blank . . .

NV and ME: Former GOP Officials Endorse Independents

From Maine Public Broadcasting:
The former chairman of the Maine Republican Party is backing Independent candidate Shawn Moody in the race for governor. Mark Ellis, of Augusta, is a long-time GOP activist who has held campaign positions with Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. He says his decision to drop out of the Republican Party in June was partially motivated by Republican Paul LePage's gubernatorial primary victory. In choosing Moody, Ellis says that the Independent candidate harbors many core Republican values and has the ability to lead Maine over the next four years.
From Nevada News and Views:
Four former Republican Elko County commissioners – Nolan Lloyd, Tony Lesperance, Royce Hackworth and Brad Roberts are supporting independent candidate Janine Hansen for Assembly District 33, saying she is a proven conservative they can trust. “Elko now has the most liberal County Commission in history,” stated Roberts. “Elko County has been plunged into debt—some $20,000,000! John Ellison has been a big part of voting for that unprecedented spending. That’s why we are endorsing Janine Hansen.

NV: Libertarian Candidate for Governor in Fundraising Race for Inclusion in Debates

From the Arthur Forest Lampitt, Jr. campaign for governor of Nevada:
Did you know that candidates are being excluded from DEBATES if they have not raised enough money?  That’s right!  KLAS-TV 8 News NOW, the Las Vegas Review Journal, and VegasPBS are only including those candidates that have raised $50,000.  As wrong and undemocratic as this is, we intend to beat them at their own game by raising at least $50,000 for future debates, so please donate whatever you can…every dollar helps!

NV: Independent Candidate for Senate Blasts Reid, Two-Party System

From the Elko Daily Free Press, an op-ed by Jesse Holland:
Our current party leadership spends money we don’t have to save money and our alternative party counters with a “money bomb” to D.C. directed by their national chairman? Is it odd to argue which political system is least corrupt at the moment? Is it witty, through discussion, to then squabble over which of these system supporting candidates are best funded, or least dishonest, or most conventional, or farthest from everyday people, or furthermost from responsible spending, or strictest in Constitutional values? Would it not be easier to actually have a responsible conventional candidate that will stand for the people over the party and the system?

NV: Modern Whigs Launch Nevada Chapter

From the inaugural post at the NV Modern Whigs:
LAS VEGAS — The Modern Whig National Executive Committee has appointed Mike Bergstrom of Winnemucca as the acting Modern Whig chairperson in Nevada. Bergstrom will act as the point of contact for Nevada residents seeking an alternative political party with a common sense approach.
The Modern Whig Party is a reformation of the Whig Party of the 1800s, modernized to fit the current political atmosphere. The party was officially revived by veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq on February 12, 2009—the 200th birthday of President Abraham Lincoln, a member of the original Whig Party. While members of the Modern Whig Party are proud of their historic roots, they are fully committed to the modern citizen. Their members consist of men and women from every corner of the country who embrace mainstream ideals as independent-minded voters.
The Modern Whig Party was formed out of necessity for a party without the polarizing aspects common in the nation’s current political climate. It supports social progression and fiscal responsibility while maintaining mainstream values. The Modern Whig Party is also adamant in rejecting fringe ideas, making it an appealing choice for those unsatisfied with the current two-party system.
Bergstrom, the newly appointed chair of the Nevada chapter, will coordinate the rapid growth of the party by being the Modern Whig spokesperson in Nevada, by promoting the Modern Whig philosophy, and by enabling the growth of a Whig network in Nevada from which volunteers, coordinators and citizen representatives will grow.
Contact Bergstrom at nevada@modernwhig.org. For more information, please visit the Modern Whig Party at www.modernwhig.org and the Nevada site at www.nevadawhigs.org.

NV: Tea Party Libertarians See Palin as "Part of Establishment"

From the Las Vegas Review Journal:
The motley mix of Republicans, libertarians, gadflies and disgruntled grandparents gathered Saturday in Searchlight for the Tea Party Express rally could fit a loose definition of conservative. Beyond that, applying just a single adjective is a stretch . . .  Others see Palin as a tool for Republican politicians to win the support of the libertarian-leaning Tea Party movement . . . "It is disappointing but not surprising," said Liz Kerby, former chairwoman of the Nye County Libertarian Party, of Palin's support for McCain. "She's not rogue, she sounds like part of that establishment," said Kerby, referring to Palin's book, "Going Rogue."

NV: Independent American Party Files Slate of 48 Candidates

From Independent American News:

Three Independent American Party candidates will be filing with the Secretary of State in Carson City on Wednesday, March 10 at 9am. The three candidates include: John Wagner for Secretary of State, Merritt “Ike” Yochum for Washoe State Senate District 4, and Cody Quirk for Capital Senate District.
The Independent American Party Candidate List filed with the Secretary of State now contains forty-eight candidates which is many more than any year since 2002 when founder Dan Hansen was in a fatal truck accident. We anticipate that we may exceed the record of 50 candidates set in 2002.
“We have had numerous candidates contact us and ask to be approved to run as Independent Americans. Many of our candidates are running for local offices where they have an excellent chance of winning. People are looking for an honest alternative to the Twin Party’s failure to represent the people,” stated John Wagner State Chairman of the Independent American Party and candidate for Secretary of State. “Our party represents going back to the basics of limited Constitutional government, which leads to economic prosperity.”

NV: Third Party Tea Party Candidate May Challenge Reid for Senate

From the Las Vegas Sun:

Sun columnist Jon Ralston is reporting that the Tea Party has qualified as a third party in Nevada and will have a candidate in the Senate race to battle for the seat held by Majority Leader Harry Reid. The party has filed a Certificate of Existence but needs to get 1 percent of the electorate to vote for its candidate in November to permanently qualify, according to the report. Ralston reported that Jon Ashjian will be the Tea Party's U.S. Senate candidate on the November ballot. Ashjian still must declare his candidacy. There are six other third-party candidates going through the verification process to appear on the ballot as U.S. Senate candidates — one Reform Party hopeful and five as independents, Ralston reported.
